When assessing your hearing, a comprehensive hearing evaluation is conducted in a sound treated booth using twenty-first century equipment. An otoscopic examination is performed to check for excessive wax or other conditions and a thorough evaluation of the middle ear and inner ear functions is completed. The test results are used to determine the type and degree of hearing loss, the need for additional medical care and to determine the best options for improving your hearing.

Types of hearing loss

In general, there are three types of hearing loss:

Conductive Hearing Loss:
This type of hearing loss is a condition of the outer and/or middle ear. It occurs when sounds coming into the ear cannot be transmitted normally through the ear canal and/or middle ear to the inner ear. The most common causes of conductive hearing loss can be a build up of wax in the ear canal, perforated eardrums, fluid in the middle ear (common in children), or damaged or defective ossicles (middle ear bones).

Sensorineural Hearing Loss:
This type of hearing loss happens when the hair cells in the inner ear break down. And can no longer convert sound vibrations into the electrical signals needed by the auditory nerve. The nerve pathways in the auditory nerve itself can also become damaged, preventing the signals from reaching the brain. Although this damage can be caused by exposure to loud noise, the primary reason is aging. Certain medications can also cause this type of hearing loss such as certain types of chemotherapy drugs.

Mixed Hearing Loss:
This kind of hearing loss is a combination of problems in the middle and inner ear and therefore both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss is present.

Hearing aids are recommended when:
. The patient has sensorineural hearing loss
. The patient has conductive or mixed hearing loss that cannot be treated medically
